A potter for 45 years my interest in the elements of clay, rock, fire and water has changed little.

In the early 1970's, several trips to the Australian inland began a fascination with the textures and colours of the rock formations, the red sandy deserts, feldspars, clays, ochres and the gidgee tree camp-fire ashes. My tests of collected samples resulted in some 'reds' which reminded me of pictures in books of lovely Japanese Red/ Shino teabowls. Also, the influence of my living close to the sparkling blue/green sea at Avalon Beach perhaps explains my interest in the Oribe glaze.

Four years of university studies in Japanese language (in Australia) led to my living more than 7 years in Tajimi, the heart of the Momoyama Era (1573 - 1615) Mino wares of Shino, Setoguro, Kiseto and Oribe. I studied and worked with a follower of Arakawa Toyozo, Shino potter, Kato Kozo and Oribe potter, Sakai Reiko.

My book titled 'Visiting the Mino Kilns' (Wild Peony Press University of Sydney East Asian Series No. 9 1995) includes my translation of Arakawa's prized work 'The Traditions of Mino Pottery'.

Work in collections and group exhibitions in Japan and Australia. A group of my Oribe 'Whispering Grass' on permanent display Tojiki Shiryokan Tajimi: 1991 solo exhibition in Tajimi: 1996 solo Exhibition and Seminar at The Japan Foundation Gallery, Sydney: Member of the Inner City Clayworkers Co-operative 1996-2000: exhibiting member of the Potters' Society of Australia since 1969.
