| Vicki Grima gave her report on her attendance at the 2nd International Ceramics Magazine Editors Association Conference in Fuping, China and received very positive feedback on the high standard of the Journal of Australian Ceramics from the other international delegates. As the Journal’s main purpose is to support and exhibit the work of Australian ceramists, this response not only demonstrates Vicki’s capabilities as Editor, but also is a recognition of the high quality of Australian ceramics. Membership numbers have risen, along with email list subscribers, and the TACA website has had a considerable number of hits coming from overseas, interestingly mainly from America. The surprise bonus from the Copyright Agency for the use of articles from the JAC has been received. A portion of this has already been allocated to the update of our website, making it even more user friendly and informative.
Response to the Visiting Ceramic Artist Schedule initiative has been positive. TACA has taken advantage of the visit of British ceramic artist Simon Carroll to Australia in February. When I was in the UK last year, staff at the Craft Potters Association Gallery said Simon Carroll’s work was the hottest thing around, so his workshops should be well worth a look. Trisha Dean has been booked to run a workshop at Gymea TAFE on the 1 & 2nd March and there are other TACA workshops in the pipeline for this year. Thank you to Ellin Pooley and Marian McLaren, our workshop organisers.
Recently I made contact with our opposite number in South Africa, Ceramics Southern Africa and we have exchanged copies of our respective journals. TACA is now listed on their website links. It’s good to have new international contacts and the possibility of future exchanges.
Our President, Julie Bartholomew, will be back at the end of January, so we can look forward to her report at the next TACA meeting. As always, every member is welcome to attend TACA meetings.
As this is a new year and we have a new Government in Canberra, one which has initially shown an interest in funding the Arts and Education, I am feeling optimistic that we may see a positive movement towards supporting the Arts, including ceramics and ceramics education. Let’s keep our fingers crossed.
