He began potting in this country at a time when it took some tenacity and inventiveness just to get results - there was nothing laid on in the 1950s. Yet, in many ways, he perhaps had the best of it, a time when pretentiousness had yet to enter ceramics and when the general public were fascintaed by the craft.
